Every year in the UK, we recruit undergraduate degree students on sandwich degree courses for a 12 month work experience placement. The scheme provides paid placements in our Process Development department within FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, Billingham, UK.
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain an insight into the operation of an international biopharmaceutical CMO. Working alongside experienced scientists you will advance your own academic knowledge and technical skills.
What will the placement be like?
During the 12 month placement you will gain first-hand experience of science and technology, including development of personal skills and putting your academic theory into practice. You will be an integral member of a lab based project team with work focused on the development, evaluation and characterisation of biopharmaceutical purification processes required for the production of novel therapeutic proteins. This invaluable experience will build your technical knowledge, as well as developing your skills in planning, organisation, communication, team working and problem solving.
What opportunities would a placement with Fujifilm bring?
With the Process Development group at our Billingham site there are a range of multidisciplinary departments available to work in; including Upstream (Molecular Biology, Microbial and Mammalian Cell Expression or Primary Separations), Downstream (Protein Purification) and Analytical. Depending on the department you will be working in, you will be given the opportunity to undertake some of these activities:
- Design and construction of DNA vectors
- Transformation and microbial fermention
- Transfection and culturing of mammalian cells
- Separation and purification of proteins
- Development and execution of analytical methods
Do I have the correct skills?
All candidates should have a keen interest in science and be competent in the following:
- Fundamental knowledge of biochemistry, cell science (including molecular biology and fermentation) and associated analytical techniques.
- Perform simple calculations (e.g. buffer compositions, molarity, use of formula weights, mass balances simple statistic biomass, growth rates).
- Operate in a dynamic team environment, interacting across departments and multiple lines of business.
Ideally candidates should be studying for a degree related to:
- Bio/Chemical Engineering
- Biomedical Sciences
- Biopharmaceutical Sciences
- Molecular and Cellular Biology
